TYDF commissions Community School Project in FCT

The TY Danjuma Foundation (TYDF) commissioned a community school in Dako, Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory. This has increased the number of completed projects funded by the Foundation on “Enhancing the Quality of Education” under its 2010 grant cycle. Dako is a remote rural community, located about 34 kilometers from Gwagwalada town without basic amenities.

TYDF supported the construction of a block of 2 classrooms with furniture, ventilated improved toilet facilities, a football pitch and school uniforms for enrolling pupils.

In a remark, the Executive Director of the Foundation, Ms. Thelma Ekiyor called on all stakeholders especially the Dako community to embrace the project and benefit from it maximally; she emphasized that the community should strive to ensure that girl child enrolment receives priority. She also revealed that the Foundation makes additional grants to build staff quarters for teachers in Dako community to solve accommodation problems which are linked with remote schools. In her words, “for us as a Foundation, this school did not cost too much, but it will touch many lives”.

The Executive Director of TCCI remarked about the significance of the project in the community. She revealed that the school, which started in a church building with less than ten (10) children enrolled, now has a classroom block, toilet facilities and even a football pitch. The reassuring news, for her, is the fact that the school now has at least eighty (80) pupils already enrolled, with more prospects already queuing up for enrolment.

Perhaps the high point of the occasion was the arrival of a contingent of Fulani residents of a community further away from Dako; this eager group stayed all through the event and openly proclaimed that they were there to ensure that their children, especially girls, got enrolled into the new school.
