TY Danjuma Foundation Meeting its $5 million Pledge to support Women and Children Health

At the 2010 United Nations Summit, the UN Secretary General launched his campaign for Women’s and Children’s Health: Every Woman, Every Child. The aim of this strategy is to prevent 33 million unwanted pregnancies between 2010 and 2015; save the lives of women who are at risk of dying of complications during pregnancy and childbirth; and to reduce child mortality around the world.

Pioneering African foundations’ involvement in Global Issues

The TY Danjuma Foundation (TYDF) was the only African foundation to make a pledge at the Summit. The Foundation pledged $5 million from 2010 to 2015, to support women and children’s health initiatives, specifically in the areas of strengthening maternal health care centres; supporting the effectiveness of stakeholders’, policy makers’, and partner organizations’ contributions in the area of child and maternal health through organising consultative meetings and capacity building trainings.

The Foundation is on track to meet and exceed its commitment. In 2010, TYDF disbursed over $1.8 million in grants and $1.3 million in 2011. The Foundation disbursed an additional $133,000 in 2011 to support grassroots interventions through its community fund mechanism. The Foundation remains committed to working with Nigerians, the government and likeminded organizations to ensure that the country achieves all the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.
